I sit, alone, in my damp cell, leaning against the right wall of the square room. The stunted light that creeps from the adjacent narrow bared window is frail; it doesn't have enough light to allow me to see my own crumbling shadow, much less give me warmth.

The prison guards didn't trust any of the Firebending inmates like I to have heat. But it made no sense to provide this command; I was told that if I preformed a single shred of fire, then I was to be disciplined ten lashes. It wasn't like I didn't try to rebel at first, but I soon learned my place as a pathetic prisoner.

“Good morning, Yuki!” Shigure’s cheerful voice calls out to me as I reach the bottom step of the staircase. He’s reclining on the living room couch, a newspaper propped up on his right knee.

I nod my head slightly as a small nod and state “Good morning, Shigure.” before I make my way to the kitchen.

“Sleep well? Shigure calls from the other room.

I yank open the refrigerator “Yes.”

“You’re up awfully early. It’s not even a school day.” His voice has a tint of confusion swimming around in it.

I blink once, twice. The morning sunlight shines through the clear glass window panel. It’s so very welcoming to my adjusting eyes. Yuki Sohma stands over my bed, smiling ever so slightly.

“It is time to get up.” He touches my shoulder with a steady hand. It’s cold, but comforting. I smile to myself.

After about a few seconds of silence, I rustle in my bed, smile, sit up, and rub my eyes sleepily “Thank you for waking me, Yuki. You really didn’t have to do that.”
